Aer Lingus stands firm on Shannon decision

AER Lingus chief executive Chrisoph Mueller was not the bearer of good news when he met staff at Shannon Airport last week to brief them on the airlines plans.

He told workers there was no change to the company’s plans to remove its US base at the airport, and the potential loss of 102 cabin crew jobs.

Two months ago, the CEO warned that Aer Lingus was to rationalise the airline’s transatlantic services from Shannon. This was followed by a period of consultation with unions and workers.

It has emerged that the company is to continue to fly from Shannon to the United States, but will crew their planes from Dublin.

Thirty-four of the 136 crew based in Shannon will operate the airline’s route to Heathrow.
