Varady prodigy for jazz ensemble

BASED at LIT, Limerick Jazz’s Workshops teach students how to to read and play jazz – ensemble sessions – using their own instruments.  Each season winds down with a major session run to professional standards, coached by Ed Hansom, a gifted trumpeter himself and PRO for Limerick Jazz Society.

Chairman John Daly tips that three ensembles will play Upstairs at Dolan’s on Wednesday May 5, winding down the Spring 2010 series.

“These ensembles will comprise of some eight musicians each and playing for about 40 minutes. The instruments used will be guitar, keyboards, bass and drums, with saxophone, clarinet, violin, trombone and voice”.

The hot ticket is gypsy guitarist Andreas Varady. Aged 12 years and with his own quartet  on the raod (featuring drummer Dave Lyttle), this Slovakian child genius has won a scholarship to New York’s Skidmore Institute. Varady’s time in Ireland has been marked by invitations to many festivals, including Cork, Brecon, Derry Jass Festival, the autumn’s London Jazz Festival and Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter Festival. He’s of gypsy stock.
