Wrecking ball poised for city eyesore

AN unfinished building that has become one of the ugliest eyesores on the city landscape is to be demolished.

Senior planner with Limerick City Council, Kieran Reeves, has confirmed that the building close to Ellen Street and Michael Street and in close proximity to the Milk Market, is set to be demolished within eight weeks.

Although planning permission had been granted to the developer seven years ago, work on the building ceased and the unfinished structure rapidly deteriorated and fell into serious dereliction.

Residents of Watergate, which is within a stone’s throw from the building, have been calling on the city council for years to take action against the developer, as the building was attracting anti-social behaviour, illegal dumping and other undesirable activity.

The building shell which has further deteriorated over the years, is now one of the ugliest vacant sites in the city and given its proximity to the recently restored Milk Market, the City Library and a number of city car parks, there have been ongoing calls for its demolition.

However, numerous approaches to the owner failed to produce a positive result but last week, a court order was imposed for its demolition.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, Mr Reeves said he expects demolition, the cost of which will be borne by the owner, to take place within a matter of weeks.

Asked if he is confident that the owner will comply with the enforcement order, Mr Reeves said there is always the possibility that he will appeal it to the Circuit Court.
