All to play for in Ulster Bank League

-

IT is the final weekend of play in the Ulster Bank League and all Limerick clubs have something to play for. Be it promotion, relegation or cup final preparations. Ross O’Donoghue previews this weekend’s games in what promises to be an exciting set of fixtures. Saturday afternoon will be a busy day as hopes and dreams will be fulfilled or dashed. Best of luck to all from Postsport.

Division 1A
Shannon v Dolphin
Shannon have conceded 23 points per game on average this season. Dolphin may have little to play for but if senior players like David Quinlan don’t lead by example then a relegation play off is entirely on the cards. Shannon need to score more league points than Garryowen on Saturday to avoid the wooden spoon.  A strong start is essential. Verdict: Shannon to win.

Young Munster v Garryowen
Garryowen’s points difference is currently keeping them safe in Division 1A.  They head to Greenfields knowing they have to get something to stay up. Young Munster need to get everything from the game and have it all to play for.  A home win could earn them a play-off spot if 3rd placed St. Mary’s lose at Old Belvedere. This won’t be pretty.  Verdict: Young Munster to win.

Division 1B
Galwegians v UL Bohs
UL Bohs have won 5/6 league games of late. They’re 3 points behind 3rd place Buccaneers who have lost 5/6. If Bohs stay on form and Buccs don’t buck the trend, then a promotion play-off could be on the cards. The Limerick men travel to Galway to face relegation dogfighters Wegians, but their key men are hitting form at the right time. Verdict: UL Bohs to win.

Bruff v Clontarf
A recent slump has seen Bruff fall from mid-table to bottom spot. They need to beat Div 1B champs Clontarf and hope UL Bohs beat Galwegians away for their season to end in safety. Bruff’s success is in cup competitions this season, and that’s the mentality they’ll need to pull through. With a good ruck and a dash of luck, they just might do it. Verdict: Bruff to win.

Division 2.
Old Crescent v Thomond
If they’re biting nails on the sidelines, what will get bitten on the pitch? Every Limerick team has something to play for on Saturday but this could be the battle to end them all. Both sides know this derby is a last realistic chance to stave off relegation. Old Crescent have home advantage while Thomond have a game in hand.  Hold onto your hats. Verdict: Old Crescent to win.
