Limerick cycling clubs line up with Bernard Hinault

IN WHAT is set to be the first International mass cycling event on the West of Ireland, a large number of Limerick cyclists are lining up to welcome five times Tour de France winner Bernard Hinault in May as the special guest at the Celtic Series Tour de Conamara, the Irish leg of a new series of international cycling sportive taking place throughout 2012. The Irish leg will be held on Sunday, May 27, in Clifden with 140km and 80km route options.  The event marks the first appearance in an Irish cycling event by the multiple Tour de France winner.

Interest has already been attracted from France, UK and the USA, and it is set to provide a significant economic boost for Clifden and the wider Connemara region.  
Former international cyclist and TG4 cycling commentator Pádraic Quinn, organiser of the Celtic Series and Tour de Conamara, commented; “the idea was to provide cyclists with a different cycling sportive experience for 2012, one that takes in great events across a number of countries and introduces international cyclists to some of the best routes in Ireland.
“Working with the events from the other Celtic regions made us realise how attractive Ireland is as a cycling destination”.
Many French fans and competitors will travel, as well as dignitaries and a French TV crew.
