The Class of 2012

Taking a look at some of Limerick’s musical highlights in 2012

Windings

IN October Limerick band Windings released their third album ‘I am Not The Crow’. More than one year was spent on the recording of I Am Not The Crow, its A-side recorded in Montreal’s Hotel2Tango studio and the B-side in Donegal.

It is the sound of a band that has played together for years and focused on making an album that they can stand by for all time. I Am Not The Crow’ is Windings best record yet. It is a band interacting and making great music together and to this reporter it will stand as one of the finest releases from a Limerick band.

Senakah

LIMERICK band Senakah (formerly Seneca) released new album ‘Human Relations’ in 2012. It was recorded with Noel Hogan (The Cranberries) on production duties. Senakah produced a video for the title track of the album as their first single in February.
The video for ‘Human Relations’ is a laugh-out-loud OTT romp about an office drone who is incapable of human relations becoming obsessed with an online she-devil with a chorus that goes “Now that your stripped naked, I’ll have my way with the hall table. Cause I have no time for Human Relations”  The video was written by, and stars, actor/comedian Ben Morrison. It was made on location in Limerick in Dolans Warehouse and the boardroom and office scenes were filmed right here at Limerick Post.
Senakah’s guitarist Brendan O’Gorman told Limerick Post last February, “We are absolutely thrilled to bits! Radio support has been great with both local and national stations giving us regular airplay and we are very grateful for that. Today FM have been playing it daily and Rick O’Shea of 2FM made it his ‘Single of The Week’.”

The Cranberries

THE Cranberries released Roses their first album since the band announced their break up in 2003. During the band’s hiatus singer Delores O’Riordan and guitarist Noel Hogan continued to send each other ideas for new material from time to time and during the very successful reunion tour in 2010, the new songs were rehearsed during sound-checks. The result is an album with quiet pop gems such as ‘Fire & Soul’ and ‘Losing My Mind’ that sit alongside the chiming guitars of current single ‘Tomorrow’. The standout track, ‘Schizophrenic Playboys’ saw the the band flex its musical muscles while Delores sings about fast cars, scarlet red lipstick and even redder bloodshot eyes.
A strong return to form and a fresh take on the sound that has made them so loved worldwide.

Make A Move

THE Make A Move festival in July was Limerick’s first Hip Hop and Street Festival and hopefully will be on the calendar for 2013 again. The festival celebrated the roots of hip hop in urban and youth culture with something for everyone from visual art to discussion forums to live music from The Hot 8 Brass Band. On the Saturday Bedford Row was turned over to Dancers, MCs and DJs including CMX, Icarus Rising, Limerockers Cru, Rainers, Colm Kenefick, Poppin John and Bboy Tommy Guns bringing a traditional U.S style block party to Limerick City centre. Sunday’s Hip Hop karaoke was one of the surprise successes of the weekend.
