Limerick face Leitrim test in NFL opener

-

LIMERICK face Leitrim this Sunday February 3 in the opening round of the National Football League. The game, which throws in at 2pm in the Gaelic Grounds, will be Limerick’s first step on the road to escaping the bottom division.

Limerick manager Maurice Horan feels that securing promotion is not only key for this season’s championshiop, but also for the long term development of Limerick Football.
“It’s key really for us to get out of this division. We have some player who are seasoned when it comes to championships and Munster finals, but for the long term plan in place for Limerick football, we need to be playing in at least division two of the national leagues. You cannot underestimate the value of playing top quality teams all season.”
A top quality Leitrim side will arrive on the Ennis Road this weekend. Fresh from their FBD League win last weekend, Leitrim are on a fine run of form.
“Leitrim are unbeaten in four and they will be looking to make that five this weekend. They have beaten some fine sides on that run too, so we know we are going to be facing a stiff test this weekend,” added the Limerick manager.
Horan, along with new coach Mick Mc Geehan, will face into the Leitrim game having to deal with a host of injuries.
Seanie Buckley and Stephen Lucey have joined John Galvin on the sidelines, long term, while bumps and bruises to other key figures will mean a new look Limerick team on Sunday.
Finally, Dromcollogher/ Broadford’s Seanie Buckley has been given the honour of captaining the Limerick Senior Football Team for 2013.
Ian Ryan ( St Senan’s) is the vice captain.
