UPWARDS of 2,700 schools have attained the Green Flag award for their approach to sustaining a better eco-environment and Limerick has been well represented among 90 per cent of schools involved nationally.
Limerick’s Gaelscoil Sairseal joined the dozens of Limerick schools already awarded for their eco approach to achieve the green standard in litter and waste management.
School principal Laura Nic Eoin said “The whole school community are delighted to have achieved our first green flag. The green school committee worked extremely hard in this endeavour where they educated the students, teachers and parents on the importance of recycling and reduced the amount of waste in the school.
“The school also began communicating to parents by email to reduce the amount of paper used in the school.
Limerick GAA captain, Donal O Grady, raised the school flag and was joined by other members of both the senior and under 21 Limerick Hurling Team.
Also present were representatives of city council including the Mayor and Limerick Person of the year Helen O’Donnell. The raising of the flag was followed by face painting and a disco in the school yard.
The Irish Green-Schools programme is one of the most successful within the international network.
