FOUL play has been ruled out by gardaí after the body of a 53-year-old grandmother was found near the banks of the river Shannon on the outskirts of Limerick city last Monday morning.

Yvonne Treacy’s partially clothed body was found on the banks of the river at an area known locally as Donnellan’s Field on New Road, Kileely just a short walk from her home at Sarsfield Gardens in Moyross.

The tragic discovery was made by a man out walking his dog shortly before 9.30am.

Mrs Treacy’s body was found lying in still water close to the banks of the River Shannon.

The married woman who is survived by her husband Ger and children, was last seen at 7pm on Sunday night in the nearby Watch House Cross area of Moyross.

This is the second time that tragedy has visited the Treacy family in recent years as the 53-year-old grandmother was said to have been heartbroken following the death of her 12-year-old son in the early nineties.

Mrs Treacy was described locally by Moyross Parish Priest Fr Tony O’Riordan as a “great mother and grandmother” having celebrated the baptism and first Holy communion of two grandchildren recently.

“They are a very well-known family in the area and our thoughts and prayers are with Ger and his family at this time,” he added.

Mrs Treacy’s remains were removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where a postmortem was carried out by the State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy and she concluded that the cause of death was not trauma related and foul play was not suspected.

Inspector Brian Sugrue, who is leading the investigation, said gardai are now waiting the results of toxicology tests “to establish if the death was accidental or natural”.

Gardai are anxious to speak to anybody who may seen Mrs Treacy on Sunday night and they are asked to contact Mayorstone Garda Station on (061) 445980.
