YOUNG Limerick athletes paved the way to healthy eating with Limerick Swimming Club’s recent ‘Health and Skills Day’.

The swimmers began their day honing their skills in the pool with Swim Ireland High Performance Coach, Lars Humer, and the club’s own four coaches. The children took the most out of the wonderful opportunity and were very excited to train under the former Team GB Olympic and Paralympic coach.

The UL Sports Club hosted the afternoon session when members of the LSC committee had prepared a banquet of delicious, healthy food. First was a dinner prepared by the Sports Bar. The children got to choose from a menu all specially prepared for the budding athletes. Afterwards they went to the ‘Tasty Table’ for some snacks.

The Swimming Club had consulted with nutritionist, Catherine Norton, to ensure that all the food was nutritious and recommended for growing, active kids. Everyone got to try a huge range of fruit and nuts as well a range of freshly prepared snacks full of complex carbohydrates and protein to fuel a young athlete. All of the food can be prepared easily and eaten at home or on the go. The most popular choice was the wholemeal wrap with peanutbutter, wrapped around a banana.

After the swimmers had tried all of the food, they attended a nutrition seminar where the swimmers really showed their interest and enthusiasm. Chairperson of Limerick Swimming Club, Christine Brennan, was very impressed with the children who embraced the day wholeheartedly.
