Harty twins win silver at Citywest

2013 EUBC European Schoolboys Boxing Championships FinalsTWIN brothers Jamie and Jason Harty did Rathkeale Boxing Club, and indeed their country, proud after both claimed silver medals for Ireland at the 2013 EUBC European Schoolboys Boxing Championships Finals in the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

They both reached the finals of their respective weight categories before losing out to Russian opponents.

In the 50kg category, Jason came up against Edgardo Tcambov and, after upping the pace, he looked like he might have done enough in the third round to edge what was a very close contest, but the judges were split 2-1 in favour of southpaw Tcambov.

Jamie reached the final of the 48kg category, where he faced Arsenii Smirnov. Boxing on the counter, he fought three very close rounds with Smirnov, although the Russian orthodox ultimately took a unanimous 3-0 decision from the judges.

The Harty twins were among 10 Irish medallists at the European championships, with a total of two golds, five silver and three bronze. There were two other Limerick boxers on the Irish team at the competition, Paddy Donovan from Our Lady of Lourdes in the 44.5kg category and St Francis’ Jordan Joyce in 68kg.
