Top jockeys unite for charity race day

Flat and National Hunt Jockeys pull together for JT McNamara and Jonjo BrightFor the first time, Flat and National Hunt Champion Jockeys from Britain and Ireland along with Irish Champion Amateur Jockeys will ride against each other in a Champion Jockeys’ Race at the Limerick Charity Raceday on Monday October 14.
This unique race, run over 1 mile and 3 furlongs, will be the showcase race on the day. The winner will be crowned the Champion of Champions. Current British Flat Champion Richard Hughes hopes to make it over to Limerick for the race as does Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore.
In addition, the British and Irish Jockeys will go head-to-head in a series of five challenge races – four hurdle races and one steeplechase. Points will be allocated to all horses that finish each race and the winning team will be announced after the fifth race. There is also a Hunters’ Steeplechase and a Bumper on the card.
All proceeds raised on the raceday will be donated to the Jockeys Emergency Fund to aid the rehabilitation of JT McNamara and Jonjo Bright, two jockeys both paralysed after suffering falls in March of this year.
Limerick Racecourse manager Russell Ferris said: “In modern racing history, a race like the Champion Jockeys’ Race has never been run at an Irish or British race meeting. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see all the champions from the different racing codes go head-to-head. I would urge all racing fans to come to the track and see this special race. The Jockeys will be available after the race for autograph signings.”
