Forests opened to filmmakers

glenstal forestA DECISION by Coillte to market its forests and recreation sites means that locations in Limerick and east Clare could be chosen by film and TV companies around the world.

An agreement has been struck between the forestry organisation and TV location specialists O’Carroll Mulhern Services to market Coillte properties for film, television and event business.

With Limerick’s Glenstal forest and the Slieve Felim mountains providing a magnificent scenic backdrop, East Clare is also considered a prime location for film and television production.

Over 16,000 hectares of forest are occupied by Maghera, Lough Atorik, Slieve Bearnagh and Violet Hill forests which are located in a picturesque area overlooking Lough Derg and Lough Graney.

Clare TD Michael McNamara commended Coillte for opening up the potential for extra revenue from the forest regions in the county and believes that film makers will be left with a lasting impression of the area.

“I believe when film makers are introduced to this area they will be enthralled. In addition, Coillte operates recreation sites at Ballycuggeran near Killaloe, Doon near Broadford, Cratloe Woods and Cahermurphy near Flagmount.

“I congratulate Coillte for thinking outside to box in their efforts to obtain extra revenue from state forests and recreation sites. In addition, there is always a significant spin off to a local area when a film company choses to locate there for a period of time.”
