The Two Tchaikovskys

A: Katherine HunkaIRISH Chamber Orchestra joins with director Patrick Mason to present an original piece of theatre ‘My Brother Peter’, based on the life and works of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.   This original production, written by Mason, is a window to the composer as seen through the eyes of his brother. Bosco Hogan is the narrator, Modest Tchaikovsky who was Peter’s biographer and created the House-Museum Kiln for the controversial composer’s legacy.

At Lime Tree Theatre, Saturday February 15, 8pm. Katherine Hunka is musical director and guest Rudi de Groote is cellist for Tchaikovsky’s selected music.

DRUID is back at Lime Tree Theatre until February 8, with Garry Hynes’  predictably original take on a classic. Dion Boucicault’s ‘The Colleen Bawn’ is given upbeat treatment, live music, a spare set and is played for laughs amid the dark.

At Lime Tree Theatre, MIC, it stars the company’s own Marie Mullen, Marty Rea; also Aisling O’Sullivan, Rory Nolan, Aaron Monaghan and from London, has brought in Irish actress Kelly McAuley in the title role. Design is by Francis O’Connor, music by Elliot Davis and interestingly, “movement by Muirne Bloomer and David Bolger”.

Essence of Love

IF bothered by the shenanigans surrounding Valentine’s Day commerce, take consolation at a free event in Daghda Church that Friday, 7.30-9.30pm.

According to its creator, Angie Smalis and Patterns Collective, audiences are invited to sit back and relax in this romantic converted church for “an evening of dance designed to be a social event. ‘The essence of love’ will be performances by Patterns’ artists accompanied by live music.

 

Film scripts

A RELIABLE  provider of writing programmes, Limerick Writers Centre at Barrington Street is hosting Eleanor McSherry’s ‘short film scriptwriting’ course. It will take place six weeks, from Saturday February 15.

McSherry, who facilitates the course, has been shortlisted by Filmbase and the Galway Filmcentre, also  for the Waterford Film Festival’s short film script award 2012.

She is a film producer with Sídhe Film which took ‘Vanner’ to Chicago, Galway, Fingal and Dingle film festivals last year, and committee member for Behind the Scenes Film Network and Richard Harris International Film Festival.

Previous success stories arising out of Barrington Street include Meave McGrath (‘Vanner’), Andrew O’Gorman and Brian Comerford.
