Suicide patrol volunteer sings life-affirming tune in Limerick

DSC_0592‘LIFE’S For Living’ is the message from Limerick singer Rachy P with her new charity single in aid of the Corbett Suicide Prevention Patrol (CSPP).

Known to passport control as Rachel Prior, the 30-year-old budding star has just released her anthem for suicide awareness and prevention with the backing of the Limerick Gospel Choir. All proceeds from the single go to CSPP, a voluntary group that patrols the River Shannon to prevent people taking their own lives.

Rachel has been a volunteer with the Corbett group for the past year, an experience which she describes as “rewarding”. The talented Limerick singer believes the stigma around suicide needs to be removed and people should speak more openly about the issue.

“There has been times in my own life where I didn’t want to be here anymore. Times when I wasn’t sure where I was going or what my purpose was,” Rachel confesses.

“But music has given my own life meaning and I just want to help other people. I hope my single helps promote awareness around suicide,” she adds.

CSPP patrols between the four bridges in the Limerick city area and identify and provide support to those in distress and maybe contemplating suicide. The volunteer unit has made scores of interventions along the riverbank since being set up two years ago.

As a volunteer with CSPP Rachel revealed that the voluntary group meet people along the river who are there because of many reasons from life events such as relationship breakdowns and the loss of a job to mental health problems.

“Suicide is a universal problem. It’s rampant right now and we meet people of all ages with all kinds of worries and issues down at the river. When I get home from a patrol I have a huge sense of relief knowing that we helped someone live to see another day,” she concluded.
