TWO hardworking Limerick volunteers were rewarded for their selfless contributions to community life at the Tidy Towns awards this week.
Helen O’Donnell, chairperson of Limerick Tidy Towns committee, and 92-year-old Mary O’Neill from Adare were presented with Tidy Towns Hero awards at the announcement of the results in Dublin on Monday.
Adare was once again named as Limerick’s tidiest community, securing a gold medal in Category C (for populations from 1,001 to 2,500) after recording an impressive score of 312 out of 450, which was only eight less than overall national winner Kilkenny City. Adare, which was also Limerick’s highest scorer in 2013, improved its score from last year by five points.
Four other Limerick communities received medals from the Tidy Towns juding panel. In Category A (population less than 200), Ardpatrick won a bronze medal for the second year in a row with a score of 305, up three from 2013, and Newcastle West also won a second consecutive bronze in Category E (population 5,001 to 10,000) with a score of 291, four points more than last year.
Galbally received a bronze medal in Category B (201 to 1,000) after scoring 306, up 11 from last year’s total, and the other bronze recipient was Kilmallock in Category C, which scored 301 points.
The trend across the county indicated further improvement on 2013’s impressive scores, reflecting the long hours of hard work from the army of volunteers in all corners of Limerick city and county.
