Pedestrians injured in hit and run by burglars in high-speed chase

THREE men in their 60s have been seriously injured, with one understood to have lost a leg, in a hit and run incident at Parteen after they were knocked down by a stolen car driven by two burglars which was being pursued by gardai this Thursday evening.

The three men had earlier played pitch and putt at the Parteen course before they called to Brown’s Bar in the village for refreshments.

Having left the bar, the three men were making their way to the car when a 99 registered stolen Hyundai Accent lost control and mounted the footpath and struck the men injuring them seriously. The car also struck another vehicle that was parked in the car park.

It is understood that one man was pinned under the stolen car and emergency crews from Limerick City Fire and Rescue had to use vehicle cutting equipment to free the man but it is understood that he lost a leg as a result of the impact from the stolen car.

The two other elderly men were injured, one seriously and all three were taken to University Hospital Limerick after being initially treated and

Gardai who were in pursuit of the two burglars, gave chase across the pitch and putt course after they fled the scene.

It is understood that the two suspects were apprehended and are currently in garda custody.

Investigators from the office of the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission have been notified of the incident.

The scene at Parteen is currently closed off while the investigation continues.
