A special sitting of Limerick District Court this Saturday has heard evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of a 26-year-old Moyross man who has been charged with two counts of burglary at addresses in Co Clare on September 25 last.

Michael Sheehan of Cliona Park, Moyross was formally arrested on Friday September 26 at 18.55 at Mayorstone Garda Station by detective garda Ronan O’Reilly and charged with two counts of burglary at houses in Aherina, Kilmore and Doonass in Clonlara on Thursday September 25.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy heard that when the accused was charged with the alleged offences he replied that he was, “sorry”.

During the brief hearing, Legal Aid Board defence solicitor John Devane said that there were no questions for the detective garda arising out of the arrest charge and caution of Mr Sheehan.

Mr Devane said that the 26-year-old was reserving his position on bail and Judge McCarthy said that he would remand the accused in custody to next Tuesday’s sitting of the District Court. The court ordered that Sheehan is to be produced from prison should he be seeking to be restored to bail.

Applying for a ruling from the court, Mr Devane said that “national media and others” had reported that his client was appearing in court on road traffic charges, but he said that “it’s abundantly clear that my client is appearing two trespass charges and nothing more. Therefore I am asking that the media rectify this”.

Judge McCarthy said that he had “no control over the media and I am only dealing with what is before me – you take it up with the media”, Judge McCarthy added.

Sheehan, seen here in the back of a garda car, was taken from Limerick District and lodged in Limerick Prison pending an application for bail next week.
