MARY Immaculate College lecturer Dr Rosemary Day has been nominated to serve on the board of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.

Dr Day said she was delighted to be nominated and that she hopes “to make a difference”.

Dr Day is the Head of the Department of Media and Communication Studies in MIC, where she researches and lectures on the BA in Liberal Arts and the Masters of Media Studies programmes.

She believes she was chosen because of her academic research into radio nationally and internationally and because of her long term commitment to the community, in particular to community radio.

Dr Day was one of the founders of Raidio na Life in Dublin and of Wired FM in Limerick.

She is also a fluent Irish speaker and hopes to encourage the use of more accessible Irish language programming on the airwaves through her work on the board.

The Broadcasting Authority was established in October 2009 to regulate content across all broadcasting, assuming the roles previously held by the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) and the Broadcasting Complaints Commission (BCC).

Other appointees include Clare Duignan, former Head of Programming in RTÉ, Professor Maeve McDonagh, who previously served on the Freedom of Information Commission and lectures in Law in UCC and Denis Wolinski, formerly of OFCOM, the UK broadcasting authority.

Minister for Transport and Communications Alex White is expected to make the appointments shortly.
