PAYDAY Productions, the outfit behind Theatre at the Savoy’s relentless trolley of shows, is rubbing chairs together to fit in three shows in one October day, Thursday 30.

As ever the last Thursday and Friday in the month are programmed, this month’s being Thursday 30 at 1pm and 6pm for ‘Crude Mechanicals’ and Friday 31 at 1pm.

Regulars cherish the Irish welcome, soup, sandwiches and professional show that sit within a lunchtime frame.

Colm O’Brien of PayDay sussed ‘Crude Mechanicals’ first in Bewley’s of Dublin.

“It is, as it says, a laugh out loud comedy, inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer’s Night Dream’. Clare Barrett is a really inventive comedic actor who essentially tells the story [the cast disappears on the stage manager] and physically, plays all parts.

“She has five chairs on the stage that represent the characters and when she sits on a chair, takes on that part. It is definitely worth seeing.”

Clare Barrett, directed by Karl Quinn, has had rave reviews for her mechanics.

The third show on Thursday 30 is at the late hour of 9pm for the 1940s’ Canadian comic series, ‘The Boneyard Man’.

Norma Lowney, producer of and actress in, is running two episodes back to back at this venue. Savoy’s uptone ambience will suit leading man, Lepage Cranbrook (Kevin Kiely), the playboy who, Bruce Wayne style, solves crime in the guise of The Boneyard Man.

Marjory Road (Karen Fitzgibbon) is his devoted and smarter girlfriend; Darren Maher and Lowney each play about a dozen parts, as with Kiely and Fitzgibbon.

This evening’s two episodes are ‘The Mirror Quacked’ and ‘The Phantom Cowpoke’, with David Irwin layering an inventive soundscape on keyboards and voice over.

All plummy chummy good sport on a monthly basis from here on.
