Kamal Ibrahim has backed a campaign by the Limerick-based Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) to encourage people to adopt animals from shelters and pounds rather than buy them from breeders or ‘puppy farms’.
The former Mister World has signed up as the face of ARAN’s latest campaign to encourage people to adopt animals in need of a home. The Limerick animal rights group’s founder John Carmody claims that many animals being left to the pound in Limerick are “nearly always killed for the lack of a good home”.
“ARAN is absolutely honoured to enlist Kamal as the face our Spring 2015 campaign encouraging people to always adopt animals from a pound or shelter, and to never buy,” said Mr Carmody.
“Every year, Irish pounds destroy thousands of dogs because there are simply not enough homes for these helpless animals,” he added.
When the Limerick Post met Kamal for his ARAN photo shoot this week, he was giving as much attention to his Yorkshire terrier Lexie as he was getting from the photographer and make-up artist.
“We’ve always had lots of dogs and cats at home. We’re big animal lovers. My mother is a big supporter of the work ARAN does too,” he said.
“This campaign was a no-brainer for me. I love animals and this campaign is about getting people to save a life rather than buy a life. I bought Lexie from a breeder seven-years-ago and, not that there was anything wrong with that, but by adopting a dog you are making a real difference by saving a life. Dogs are not a commodity to be thrown away,” he added.
