Diesel and heating oil thefts in County Limerick are becoming an issue of great concern after a school, a soccer club and a number of lorries were targeted by criminal gangs recently.
Thieves targeted a national school in Pallaskenry shortly after nightfall last Saturday when up to €600 worth of fuel was stolen. Heating oil was also stolen from a soccer club in Askeaton shortly before midnight the following night.
Diesel was siphoned from a number of lorries parked overnight at Foynes Port late last month while a county Limerick coach transport company was also targeted by what Gardaí believe is a criminal gang operating in rural locations.
Limerick city and county councillor Emmett O’Brien, who is a members of the council’s Joint Policing Committee, said that “thieves are stooping even lower as a number of private cars have been broken in to while their owners have attended funerals.
“Gardaí are doing their best to tackle this but they are under resourced in the area. The Government should come to the aid of the ordinary people of rural Ireland and provide us with adequate numbers of Gardaí.
