THE Anti Austerity Alliance kickstarted its campaign in Limerick this week for a Yes vote in the Marriage Equality referendum on May 22, hailing it as the “first step in a broad struggle to achieve full equality for the LGBTQ community”.

Speaking at the campaign launch,  AAA councillor for City North, Cian Prendiville, said a Yes vote would be a huge step in achieving legislative equality for same sex couples.

“Opinion polls show a majority support this, proof of how working class people now favour a more progressive, secular society. However, we cannot be complacent. The No Campaign and its conservative, right wing ideology represents an ever dwindling minority, but still has considerable resources,” he claimed.

AAA councillor for City West, John Loftus, said the masses must be mobilised to vote for what he deems a historic breakthrough for LGBTQ rights and a significant step away from the repressive past where the Catholic Church ruled.

“We must use the momentum around this campaign to push for real change and challenge homophobia in all sections of society,” said Cllr Loftus.

Cllr Paul Keller pointed out that rights are never given, they must be fought for.

“Victory in this fight for marriage equality will send a strong message that ordinary people won’t accept injustice and inequality any more. I would encourage everyone who opposes injustice and inequality to vote yes on May 22 and join the fight for full equality,” the City East representative added.
