Litter fines

keep_britain_tidyALMOST 800 litter fines were issued by Limerick City and County Council last year taking in a revenue of €36,575. Under the Litter Pollution Acts 1997-2009 an on-the-spot fine of €150 can be issued for any breaches of these Acts, or a fine of €4,000 may be imposed if legal proceedings are initiated. Of the 794 litter fines issued in 2014 only 341 were paid. The local authority initiated 48 prosecutions for non-payment and 30 convictions were secured. Meanwhile, despite several campaigns to combat dog fouling, only two litter fines were issued by Limerick City and County Council last year in relation to dog owners not cleaning up after their pets. Neither were paid and legal proceedings were not initiated.
