THIS portrait of percussionist John Daly, long standing chairman of Limerick Jazz Society, was painted by South American artist Martin Devek. Devek lives in Northern Ireland and is on a mission to paint 12 signal musicians for a series that will hang in National Gallery, Dublin in 2016 as part of the ‘Jazz in Ireland Collection’.

Other names under study are Richie Buckley and Linley Hamilton. This painting is from a photograph taken of Daly’s band The Modern Quartet at a gig in McHugh’s Bar in Belfast this April, touring with their debut album. John Daly is co-founder of Limerick Jazz Festival, has worked with Limerick Jazz Society for three decades, is linchpin to several bands – pantomime and musicals also – and is an ardent pioneer of platforming compositions by emerging and established musicians.
