FINE GAEL’s Cllr Liam Galvin has become the new Mayor of Limerick City and County Council with fellow party councillor Gerald Mitchell being elected as his right-hand man.

Cllr Galvin romped home in the election, gaining support for all but the Sinn Fein and Anti Austerity Alliance parties and taking 28 votes with him to don the chain of office.

He told a chamber packed with friends and family that he felt privileged to “have been afforded this honour …which is without doubt the highest accolade attainable by a local councillor”.
