Boxing – Limerick’s Donovan qualifies for World Championships

LIMERICK’S Paddy Donovan (15) will fight at the 2015 AIBA World Boxing championships in St Petersburg Russia this September having won the  Open Senior Cadet Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium last weekend.
The Our Lady of Lourdes St Saviours man claimed a unanimous decision over Galway prospect Gabriel Dossan in the last final of the 60 kg category.
Donovan, the 2015 All Ireland 57kg champion, added to his medal haul with this qualifier win, which sees the 15 year old now enter camp in Belfast ahead of the World championships which run from Setpember 4 to 12.
The Limerick fighter, who has been a member of Our Lady of Lourdes St Saviours since he was 3, defeated Matthew Mc Donagh in the quarter final, before defeating Colm Quinn in the semi final.
Donovan, whose brother Edward is also an Irish champion has been coached by Shane Daly and his father Martin to this point.
However, the World Championships will be the first time Paddy will be under the coaching umbrella of the Irish national boxing squad.
in all, seventy three bouts were completed over the course of the 2015 Open Senior Cadets last weekend.
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association used the Open Senior Cadet Championships to assist with their selection process for September’s AIBA World Junior Championships in St Petersburg, Russia.
