AN Irish person living in Ireland cannot be part of an ethnic group unless they first came here from another country.

That’s the view of former mayor Cllr Kevin Sheahan.

Speaking about crime in County Limerick at this Tuesday’s Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District meeting, the Fianna Fail politician said that people claiming to be of a separate ethnic group should first look up the meaning of the word ethnicity.

“It derives from the Greek vocabulary. Before someone claims to be part of a separate ethnic group they must first have come from another country. An Irishman living in Ireland cannot be part of a separate ethnic group,” Cllr Sheahan explained.

“They waffle on about being part of an ethnic group for what benefit? Benefits far too common in certain areas,” he claimed.

“This is blatantly happening all over Askeaton. They haven’t done a day’s work in their whole lives and they get everything. Other people who have worked their entire lives can’t get a fair slice. We don’t regard the people who deserve it. We should be on the side of the law-abiding citizen who pay their taxes.”
