LIMERICK model agent Hilary Thompson has voiced her support for a call to ban fur farming in Ireland.

And she has teamed up with a Limerick-based animal rights group who are urging people to swear off real fur. The local model agent is supporting the new 2016 anti-fur campaign spearheaded by ARAN (Animal Rights Action Network).

Hilary, a longtime animal welfare supporter, says she recently learned about the horrors of the fur trade when ARAN showed her footage of Irish fur farms. She says she is happy to show her support for the campaign to ban fur farming in Ireland by wearing ARAN’s new limited edition 2016 anti-fur t-shirt.

“I was really shocked when I saw how animals were kept in filthy and cramped cages before being gassed to death. I get really emotional when I think about it,” she explained.

“Cruelty is the big issue here. I have no right to dictate to people, but I got involved to see if I could get people to stop and think. There are lots of alternatives like faux fur out there.”

Hilary joins with other well-known personalities including Anjelica Huston, Linda Martin and Adele King in supporting ARAN’s campaigns against cruelty to animals.

“We hope people everywhere will keep the skins of dead animals off their backs and just be happy with their own skin,” said ARAN founder John Carmody.

“We want fashionistas to know that animals on fur farms spend their entire in cramped, filthy cages before they are beaten, gassed or electrocuted and are sometimes skinned while they are still alive. Designers such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Vivienne Westwood, have publicly sworn off fur because it is so cruel,” he claimed.

Ireland currently has five fur farms housing over 200,000 animals.
