THE plight of 200,000 Ugandan women suffering from birth fistula, gender inequality in society, the value of networking and top marketing trends were all touched on by Emma Heuston during her speech at a Network Ireland Limerick event which marked International Women’s Day.

Network Limerick Ireland hosted the special event last week at the Savoy Hotel, Limerick to celebrate International Women’s Day. Women in Business and the Arts from across the mid-west heard the insightful talk from guest speaker Emma Heuston, Cook Medical’s Director of Global Marketing.

During her one hour speech, Emma spoke about her position as Director of Global Marketing at Cook Medical and how she broke through 5 glass ceilings to get there. Having worked across a wide variety of industries – telecommunications, financial services, oil, gas and medical devices – she attributes her success to self-belief, networking from an early age and her drive for new challenges.

She talked about how teams in Cook Medical are helping Ugandan women suffering from Obstetric fistula – a devastating and serious childbirth injury. There are two million cases of obstetric fistula worldwide which most commonly occurs among women who live in low-resource countries and give birth without medical assistance.

She then noted that while role of women in the Western World has changed vastly, inequality is still prevalent and the message from society is that women can’t achieve the same as men. She called on women in power to persuade government and companies to adopt gender equality policies so that equality is a living concept for the next generation.

She ended her speech by sharing her top 7 tips in the new world of marketing that could be applied by organisations of all sizes wanting to extend their market reach.
