A MAN has been rescued from the River Shannon during the early hours of this Thursday morning by emergency response services in Limerick.

Shortly before 4am, Gardai were alerted to a male aged in his 30s who was found to be in distress on the mud flats near the Condell Road near the Shannon Bridge.

As Gardai assisted, two units from Limerick City Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and assisted in the rescue of the man.

Using specialised equipment and mud recovery mats, Swiftwater Rescue Technician firefighters recovered the man and brought him to safety.

The male was initially assessed and treated at the scene by Emergency Paramedics before he was transferred to University Hospital Limerick.
