ST JOHN’S Cathedral and its famous, 152 year-old Hill organ are in for a wonderful night of music this September 30 when Martin Baker, master of music at Westminster Cathedral, plays in concert solo.

Be at this 1000-seater venue for 7.30pm, ticketed at door €10.

This master musician is a real coup for the city, brought to us through the excellent offices of Limerick Pipe Organ Festival. LPOF  was initiated for City of Culture 2014 and is funded by the Diocese of Limerick, ticket sales and fundraising.

Friday’s is the last in 15 events this year featuring world class artists such as Baker and David Cassan. Cassan entertained in Church of the Sacred Heart for free on that auspicious date for European Capital of Culture 2020 decision status, July 12.

Peter Barley, organist with St Mary’s Cathedral, is co-artistic director of the festival with Bernadette Kiely, organist with St John’s Cathedral. They have an excited welcome for Martin Baker.

“So much about Limerick Pipe Organ Festival has been about bringing local, national and international talent to the fore,” Barley makes clear. “Martin Baker began his career at Westminster Cathedral as junior second organist, went onto at St Paul’s Cathedral as assistant organist and then went on to Westminster Abbey as second organist.

“Ultimately, he came back to Westminster Cathedral as the organist. He is unique in having served at the three most famous churches in London”.

“What Martin is known for is being a fabulous improvisor. Myself and Bernadette are keen to champion the art of improvisation in this festival. It’s very difficult to do well and… to do something soulfully and structured that maintains the integrity of the music, that is exceptional”.

Baker gives a master class in St John’s Cathedral on Thursday 29 from 2pm to 5pm , €5. Next day, enjoy “a wonderful chance” to hear this great performer’s unique interpretations.
