Soccer – A night of celebration for Limerick FC

A full 41 days after securing the title, the Super Blues will get to lift the silverware in recognition of what has been an excellent season.
There promises to be a jovial atmosphere at Markets Field on Saturday, although a half-time event will add a poignant touch to the evening.
During the interval, a Limerick Legends penalty shoot-out will take place to honour avid Limerick FC supporter Harry Murnane, who died suddenly last February at the age of just 36.
Iconic former players such as Kevin Fitzpatrick, Al Finucane, Johnny Walsh and Pat Nolan will all participate as Harry’s memory is celebrated. In his short life, he was heavily involved with the Make A Wish foundation and, prior to his death, he often encouraged friends to contribute to the charity.
Meanwhile, the guest of honour at Saturday’s game will be Hughie Hamilton, the scorer of two goals in Limerick’s 1971 FAI Cup final replay triumph over Drogheda.
The Super Blues’ hopes of completing the entire league season unbeaten came to an end last Saturday when they lost 2-0 away to Cobh Ramblers.
Goals from Shane O’Connor and Rob Lehane in the second half meant that Limerick’s undefeated streak in the First Division ended at 24 matches, while Martin Russell’s men also finished with 10 players after captain Shane Duggan was sent off.
Limerick picked up their first win in four games on Tuesday night when they defeated Athlone Town 1-0 at Markets Field, Paul O’Conor’s 76th minute goal proving sufficient to secure all three points for the Shannonsiders.
Their season will conclude on Saturday week with an away fixture against Cabinteely in what will be Limerick’s final game in the First Division before they return to the top flight next Spring.
