Basketball – UL Eagles lose out to DCU Saints

11970107052011021056IT WAS a disappointing night for the Eagles at DCU Saints where they went down by 14 points to a physically stronger Saints side. Eagles started slowly allowing DCU to get a succession of second chance points and ended the quarter 24:18 down. The second quarter started much better for the away team with Patrick McCarthy and Krystian Burchardt putting some nice score together, with 3 minutes remaining the Eagles took a one point lead lead when Eoin Quigley scored a free throw. Then a total lapse of contraction at the defence end allowed a 1 point lead to be turned into a 10 point deficit at the end of the half with the Eagle going in down 41:31.

A various periods during the third quarter the Eagles made a number of runs getting the score down to 5 points on one occasion, only for DCU to respond each time and keep a safe distance ahead. By the end of the third the Eagles trailed by 55:42. The fourth quarter followed the same pattern and despite the best effort of the energetic Eagles DCU won by 14pts 74:60.

On a difficult night for the team the most telling statistic was rebounding where DCU out responded the Eagles comprehensively by 48 to 26 with 6’ 8” Latvian Martin Provizors claiming 16 rebounds. For the Eagles McCarthy, Burchardt and Howlin had commendable performances.

Next week the team are away again at the National Basketball Arena to play Sword Thunder tipoff is at 2pm on Sunday and a live stream of the game will be available from the Basketball Ireland website.
