A murder investigation is likely to be launched in Limerick later this Friday after a man died following an assault in the city

THE victim of an attack in Limerick on Wednesday night has died this Friday morning in hospital as a result of serious head injuries.

The man, aged in his 50s, was found on a pathway outside an apartment block adjacent to the People’s Park on Lord Edward Street shortly after 7:45pm on Wednesday night.

The man was found by a passerby with serious head injuries.

It is understood that the victim was involved in an altercation with another man who fled the scene after the attack.

Emergency services attended the scene and the victim was brought to University Hospital Limerick for emergency treatment, but given the nature and extent of the injuries, the man was transferred to Cork University Hospital.

The 51-year-old died this Friday morning and Gardai notified the office of the State Pathologist.

A post mortem examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation but a murder investigation is likely to be launched.

Crime scene investigators conducted initial investigations at the scene and a number of items have been sent for forensic examination.
