THE violinist Carolin Widmann will direct the Irish Chamber Orchestra for the first time this November as her brother Jörg, principal conductor, is indisposed.

The orchestra will perform ‘Widmann’s Mendelssohn’, many works by the great composer, in Dublin on Wednesday November 9, Limerick on Thursday 10, 8pm at UCH and in Cork on the 11th.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in D minor was written when he was aged 13.

The ICO’s Charlotte Eglington describes it as  “a remarkable fulfilling and mature work that shows a composer with emotional insight far beyond his years. Widmann’s scorching delivery will not disappoint.

“Mendelssohn’s sparkling String Symphonies offer an amazing treasure chest of delights. No. 5 is deliciously bite-sized, arguing its way through a fertile field of merry movements and atmospheric, thoughtful andantes. Fascinated by yodeling all things Swiss, Mendelssohn conveys a trip to the Alps in No. 9 – another brilliant and masterful achievement for a 14 year old”.

Then Carolin Widmann demonstrates her ability as musician, playing her brother Jörg’s Etudes 1-3 “which are virtuosic, full of texture and character”.

The programme also offers ‘Nimbus for String Orchestra’ composed by Sam Perkin for the ICO and directed by orchestra leader, Katherine Hunka.
