UCH Cinema will screen The Wall as part of the annual Professor’s Choice film selection.
This screening was chosen by Professor Eoin Devereux, recognised internationally as an expert on media and popular culture, and organizer of symposia on Joy Division; David Bowie; The Smiths and Morrissey.
Professor Eoin nominates a music related film each season he told Limerick Post.
“I have a close involvement with UCH – I have been a board member for over 7 years. When launching their series of screenings last year they asked me as a member of the Popular Music and Popular Culture Research Cluster at UL to nominate a music related film each season. Last year it was Labyrinth, and this year it’s The Wall.”
Starring Bob Geldof at the age of 31, The Wall is a British live-action and animated psychological horror directed by Alan Parker with animation by political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, and is based on the 1979 Pink Floyd album of the same name. It follows the story of Pink, a rock and roll performer, who sits in a locked hotel room, somewhere in Los Angeles. Too many shows, too much dope, too much applause: a burned out case. The screenplay was written by Pink Floyd vocalist and bassist Roger Waters.
Pink Floyd are still a much loved band in Limerick that sell out shows when the members perform. Albums The Wall and Dark Side of The Moon still sell to a new generation of vinyl collectors. But has the film The Wall stood the test of time as well as Pink Floyd’s musical output?
“It has. It is one of the best rock music films ever made. Mixing animation, performance and a screenplay it is still an astounding film about the rock music industry. It’s particularly good on the excesses experienced by many (1970s) rock stars. The live concert version of The Wall in turn has been a phenomenal success.”
As well as curating the Professor’s Choice nomination. Eoin will also be DJ’ing with Rebel Rebel, the Bowie Tribute Act in Dolans on December 2 and hosting another Manchester Night with These Charming Men on December 28.
UCH Cinema screens The Wall this Monday November 14.
