PETER Barley, organist with St Mary’s Cathedral and the man who shapes its music programme, got in touch about the Cathedral’s excellent free Wednesday concerts at 1.15pm.

“We are privileged to welcome back the young Canadian organist David Simon – who has just played at Coventry Cathedral on a short recital tour – to play at St Mary’s Cathedral on Wednesday June 14.

“He has chosen a most appealing programme of music by J.S. Bach and Mendelssohn. His concert also presents a rare opportunity to hear some Canadian organ music by Gerald Bales. David is currently studying with the world famous organist Dr Thomas Murray at Yale University USA.

“Then we have the welcome return of stringed instruments for June 21 and 28 with concerts by violinist Yuki Nishioka and cellist Frank Schaefer, accompanied by pianists Irina Dernova and Ethna Tinney respectively.”

We hear that the sonorous chamber music of Brahms will be a particular highlight.
