Future Islands: chest thumping intensity at Dolan’s

THE buzz of anticipation at Dolan’s Warehouse was palpable last Monday night as fans of Future Islands – who had snapped up tickets for this show in minutes – would finally see the Baltimore based band on stage.

Dolan’s was  the most intimate venue of this quartet’s tour. The trio of Samuel T. Herring (vocals, lyrics), William Cashion (bass, guitars) and Gerrit Welmers (keyboards, programming) enlisted Michael Lowry – not that one! – who joined the band on drums before the by-now legendary performance of ‘Seasons (Waiting On You)’ on David Letterman’s late night TV show

“We always dreamed of playing a venue like this – we still dream of playing a venue like this,” announced Sam T to an ecstatic crowd.

At the band’s insistence the Irish leg of this tour was not to just take in a Dublin gig. Their agent Leagues O’Toole booked the band into sold out shows at big venues in Cork (Opera House), Galway (Black Box) and their biggest Irish show to date at the Iveagh Gardens, Dublin this Thursday 6.

But before all that, Future Islands got to have a day off in Limerick last Sunday to check out the town and enjoy a few beers at The Locke Bar.

Future Islands in the Warehouse last Monday was a night of sweat, energy and honesty. The reverential crowd lapped up Samuel T. Herring’s intense performance as he gave everything to the show.

The band played a generous helping from the new album The Far Field of their chest-pounding odes to love and touring the world in their free electric band, as well tracks from their breakthrough LP ‘Singles’.

After an intense show Sam T thanked the audience, his band, Dolan’s and his booker saying the band wanted to see more of the country on this tour.

“We said to our booker, just get us out of Dublin! Don’t get me wrong – we love playing in Dublin  – but we wanted to see the rest of the country!”

Cue the biggest most rapturous cheer of the night from a Limerick crowd who appreciated the gesture and got a magical gig to boot.

Will they be back?

Damn right they will!
