Scammers are purporting to be from Irish Water in the return of an email phishing scam

LIMERICK homeowners and residents are being warned of the return of an Irish Water themed card-stealing online phishing scam.

In its latest warning notice, ESET Ireland said that the custom made scam for Irish computer users, is doing the rounds again.

Coming in the form of an email titled “Update your account details” and equipped with Irish Water graphics, the phoney email says:

“Irish Water is performing the annual account maintenance procedure. Please login to your account and complete the requested actions. Once logged in you will be guided to the rest of the process.

Log in now to My Water and complete your online account maintenance.”

Clicking on the link leads to a forged log-in page, where the victim first hands over their Irish Water log-in details and is then asked to enter all the details of their credit or debit card as well.

After providing the cybercriminals with all the required info, the user gets bounced back to the genuine Irish Water website.

Users should avoid clicking on any links in such fraudulent emails, as they can lead to counterfeit or infected websites, that can spread malware or cause financial damage.
