City festivals to celebrate Hip Hop, New York and fun for kids of all ages

Lots of cultural happenings, live gigs and fun for all the family here in the city over the next fortnight. From hip hop to Ireland’s relationship with New York to the Buladh Bos Children’s Festival, here are some recommendations for those spending some time in Limerick

Make A Move

NOW in its sixth year the Make A Move Festival of Hip Hop happens in various venues across the city this weekend featuring over 30 artists and performers from Hip-Hop, Grime and Spoken Word backgrounds.

Festival chairperson Shane Curtin told Limerick Post: “It’s a really exciting time, not only are we presenting what we feel is one of our most diverse and exciting lineups since the festival’s inception but with other festivals running at the same time (I.NY and Open House), there couldn’t be a better weekend to pay a visit to Limerick.”

Highlights:

Pharmacia Bar: Showcase gig with Dublin’s Mango and Mathman, Rebel Phoenix, Tipperary based Mentally Unfocussed, and Limerick’s SameD4ence. Saturday October 7 at 9pm.

A discussion titled ‘The Politics of Art’ hosted by Jim Carroll (Irish Times / RTE). Saturday October 7 at Ormston House 2pm.

At Music Generation, Cecil Street: Workshops in Music Production and DJing for Women with Gash Collective, Aoife Nic Canna and DIE Limerick’s resident Maedbh O’Connor. Live Ableton and Production Workshop for all with IAMIAN, Mankyy and Moving Still. 12pm

I.NY

THE I.NY festival held here in Limerick will celebrate the relationship Ireland and the Irish have with New York City. Created by David O’Donovan and Aoife Flynn, I.NY aims to become a “key place of exchange and engagement between Irish and New York audiences and communities.”

The ten day celebration runs from October 5 to October 15 and will include music, literature, film, theatre, exhibitions, presentations and street-art.

Highlights:

Gerry Leonard in Conversation and Performance. New York based Gerry Leonard was musical director for David Bowie since 2003, and a member of Bowie’s inner circle for 15 years. Clontarf born Leonard settled in New York’s East Village and worked with the artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Sophie B. Hawkins and Rufus Wainwright.

Gerry will be in conversation with Professor Eoin Devereux, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, UL who co-organised the first academic symposium on David Bowie in 2012. Sunday October 8 at Dolan’s from 7.30pm.

Academy Award winning singer/songwriter Glen Hansard (The Frames) and novelist Joseph O’Connor (Star of the Sea) will discuss New York, its impact on their personal and creative lives. They will present the writing and songs born from that influence at Lime Tree Theatre, Wednesday October 11.

New York based Qool DJ Marv (Weekly resident at Soho House, New York) plays the I.NY Festival Club at the Granary on Thursday 5, Saturday 7 and Thursday 12 October and admission is free. He also plays with Mother DJs at Social & Co. Fri 6 & 13 Oct.

Damien Dempsey & Chris Byrne will be in conversation at Dolans Warehouse on Sunday October 15, 8pm.

Damien Dempsey wrote ‘Apple Of My Eye’ from a cramped Brooklyn apartment while gigging in New York at Chris Byrne’s bar in Manhattan. Chris Byrne is a former member of Irish-American rockers Black 47. Byrne left his career as a New York police officer to join the band, and having signed with the label of The Pogues manager Frank Murray.

Belltable will screen New York related films this week; Men at Lunch (Screening and Q&A) October 5; In America, October 6; Brooklyn, October 7.

Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival

THIS Australian slapstick physical comedy of Trash Test Dummies could be your highlight of the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival happening this month. Fun for all the family, these highly skilled circus performers use household wheelie bins and other props to perform a stunning array of jaw dropping acrobatics, juggling and stunt work. Trash Test Dummies are winners of the best children’s presentation at the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2016 and 2015 and are just back from a sell out season at the Edinburgh Fringe. It was originally created to be a kids’ show and has since turned out to be an essential family show

Highlights:

The Assistant’s Revenge is a Detective story, a murder mystery with a magical twist. Belltable on Tuesday, October 10, 7pm. Suitable for 7 years+.

flying&falling

Dancers Florian Bilbao and Rafal Dziemidok perform a playful, poetic and comic act of flying and falling for Age: 2-3 years at Dance Limerick on Wednesday, October 11.

Fantasmagorical: After a sold out show in June 2017, Joe Daly’s magic show Fantasmagorical returns to Limerick for the Bualadh Bos Children’s Festival. Belltable on Saturday, October 21.
