WORDS to the free and the brave: this gig is going to be hot. Limerick Jazz Ensemble Workshops are producing a concert night with circa30 musicians and singers giving it socks with sax. They are going to play fast and loose in a series of ensembles rolling out Tuesday 5 from 7pm.

Expect a big melodic sound from the gig for this, their 10th Anniversary party. At Limerick Jazz Festival in September, the set the seniors delivered  thrilled.

Dolan’s Upstairs, regular home to Jazz Society and guests, is venue. Look forward to career musicians plus teachers of music leading these accomplished groups that will each have a repertoire to entertain.

“We are starting off at 7pm this year as we have so many on stage,” explains John Daly of LJS, plus Peter Dee Academy of Music. “First up on stage is the Junior Jazz Ensemble of average age 15, 16ish. Five very talented musicians they are from the Reds School of Music and Limerick School of Music and two of them, Róisín O’Donovan and Heather Nash have been accepted into the National Youth Orchestra”.

Expect experienced names such as Peter Hanagan on bass, John Daly, percussion plus Steve Hanks on sax leading two ensembles.

Multi-instrumentalist Bryan Meehan leads another couple and guitarist Joe O’Callaghan is working with jazz singer Gwen Moore of MIC and Shannon Morrissey, singer and musician, in trio.

“Full credit to Ed Hansom (saxophone) for founding and leading these workshops over the past decade. Ed has funded a lot of it himself although this year the Arts Council helped and we developed the Junior section with that”.

Finger food served and just €5 in.
