Festive classics from Scandinavia with ICO

Ailish Tynan leads this annual treat

A PROGRAMME of Sibelius, Vivaldi, Grieg, Mohr/ Gruber will sway our mind by candlelight to the North Pole when Irish Chamber Orchestra tunes up in St Mary’s Cathedral. This annual ‘Best of Christmas’ in partnership with soprano Ailish Tynan will take place on Thursday December 14 at 8pm.

Loved by the community, this festive concert is all but sell-out each year so book ahead on www.irishchamberorchestra.com

For the orchestra, Charlotte Eglington suggests we look ahead to happy strings from Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy and of course, Ireland.

“Vivaldi’s Paris Concerti are full of joy and No. 2, performed by the ICO, brims with nimble rhythmic vivacity. Grieg’s Holberg Suite demonstrates his great skill with simple harmonies that are powerfully moving.

“Songs were a constant in his output and Ailish Tynan sings some of Grieg’s most beautiful, which are lush and full of melody. Moraeus’s Koppangen (Holy Night) oozes Christmas warmth while the beautiful Sankta Lucia is always sung at the Festival of Light in Sweden.

“The much loved Wexford Carol is paired with another old Irish classic, Don Oíche úd I mBeithil. Oh Holy Night is the jewel in crown of this superb line up of songs.”

Expect the warm and personable Tynan to give it everything.
