AN INITIATIVE in Southill to inspire families to read together has been a great success.
The “One Book, One Southill” was launched to bring families, schools and agencies together by reading one book; “Tom Crean- Iceman”, by Michael Smith, about the Antarctic explorer from Kerry.
The author visited the schools involved and conducted workshops, while he also gave an evening workshop for adults.

The younger generation were given a related picture book, “Tom Crean’s Rabbit” by Meredith Hooper.
The project was concluded on April 2 with an evening in the Southill Area Centre including a display of art and project work and a table quiz on “Iceman-Tom Crean”.
Mary Blennerhassett, the home/school liaison officer in Southill, is behind the project and said: “This has been a phenomenal success with a reasonable estimate of 4,000 people having read “ Iceman” or the related book”.
