THE city will come alive today when two of the biggest and most colourful parades of the year are held. The organisers have also ensured the parades wonโ€™t clash.

ย Laura Ryan of Limerick Co-ordination office, explained: โ€œThe car-free parade will begin at 1pm, and although people will gather to take part in Limerick Pride at 1pm, that parade wonโ€™t start until 2pm. The car-free parade will begin at Merchantโ€™s Quay, and travel to the Treaty Stone, via King Johnโ€™s Castle. Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Kiely, has encouraged families to come out for the event.

โ€œThis is a great day out for the family; a chance to have fun, enjoy some great entertainment and to showcase the cityโ€™s recently remodelled riverscapeโ€. Limerickโ€™s Pride parade will start in Pery Square at 2pm today and travel down Henry Street, turning at Sarsfield Street and back to Oโ€™Connell Street.

Dozens of fun fringe activities will take place around both parades. The Post-Pride block party will involve music food and dance, street performers, a barbecue and a dog show. Michelle Costello, Limerick Pride PRO, said: โ€œItโ€™s wonderful to have the support for this festival from the City Council, outside of Dublin, we are the only city t do this. It makes a massive impact on the community to know how much support is out thereโ€.
