Carducci String Quartet

CARDUCCI Quartet makes a welcome return to Limerick at All Saints’ Church, Castleconnell to present a concert on Tuesday December 8 at 8pm.

The concert will comprise three String Quartets by Beethoven, including possibly his greatest, Opus 131 in C sharp minor.

The Carducci Quartet includes Matthew Denton (violin), Michelle Fleming (violin), Eoin Schmidt-Martin (viola) and Emma Denton (cello).

This year it will embark on debut tours of South America and Australia, as well as engagements in North America. They have received wide critical acclaim for recordings in their own record label Carducci Classics, which was launched with a CD of Haydn String Quartets.

This December 8 concert, the last in the 2009 Winter classic series, is presented with the assistance of Music Network and Limerick County Arts Office.

Benefit for Alzheimer Society

AN accomplished gathering of Mid West singers and musicians band together on Monday November 30 for Alzheimer Society of Ireland, Limerick branch.

UCH is the platform at 8pm and Lorcan Murray of RTE lyric fm for Remembered Joys, the 2nd annual concert raising funds for respite centre Waterville Lodge in Ballina. The group line up includes The Savoy Orchestra, Seoda, McCormack Singers, The Limerick Tenors and soloists/ singers/ songwriters of the calibre of Johnny Duhan (who returned unsought expenses to the fund), Denis Allen, Tommy Drennan, Derek Moloney, John Doyle, Joe Sciascia, Michael Nash, Michael Shortt and Olive O’Brien.

Tony Doyle is producing this major turnout and acoustics, with able help from Bryan Meehan, Noel Dillon and Peter Hanagan. Last year this concert sold out South Court Hotel and the organising committee is hoping to repeat the same success in the 1000 seater concert hall.

It’s Christmastime at UL

THE Christmas spirit will fill our concert hall this December with shows as various as The Celtic Tenors to an Elvis showband tribute. On Saturday December 5, UL Orchestra presents its annual Christmas concert at UCH.

‘It’s Christmastime’ will feature a range of musical styles; these include the traditional Suppe’s Poet and Peasant Overture, followed by the wonderful sounds of the Italian Symphony by Handel.

The all girls’ choir from Presentation Secondary School, under Gabrielle Lee Casey, are the guests invited by the orchestra to join them on stage this year.

Once the students have finished their varied programme, UL Orchestra will get into the festive swing with a selection of seasonal favourites, conducted by Michael John Ryan. Book at www.uch.ie for the 8pm show.

Writers’ Centre at the Locke

LIMERICK Writers’ Centre will hold its On The Nail reading session at Locke Bar & Restaurant, George’s Quay on Thursday December 3, at 8pm.

This special Christmas celebration will have an open mic seminar at which poets, storytellers, musicians and writers all have a chance to participate.

Anyone interested in creative writing shouldn’t miss the chance to meet with like-minded people, advises the centre. The night will begin at 8pm, admission is free, and there’s a glass of wine and finger food for all.
