Limerick on high after superb week

-

IN the week of St Patrick’s Day, pride is a word used often. This little island nation makes the World stop for 24 hours as people from California to Korea celebrate our patron saint’s festival. The day itself is the day when Irish people are even more proud of where they are from. The City of Limerick has few days like it. Often it is Heineken Cup finals or Cheltenham festivals where we have to share success with the nation or other counties.

Our county sides in GAA and soccer have not been too successful lately, so the green flag of Luimni has not been raised for a while on the sporting pole.

In the week just gone however, there were two outstanding moments for Limerick people to be proud of. Moments when you were willing to inform whomever would listen that you came from the Treaty county. The instances I am talking about may seem trivial to some but to others they encapsulate what Limerick is about. Winning and performing when no one really gives you a chance.

The first moment I am talking about is the Harty Cup final last week. Ard Scoil Ris claimed the title for the first time ever. Defeating the reigning champs in the process. The second performance was that of Keith Earls for Ireland against Wales. The fact that Tomas O Leary got man of the match only went to show what Limerick people are battling against every day on the sports fields. Ard Scoil were not the favourites to win. The school has seen more heartache than success, but hard work pays off.

The same applies to Earls. Four years to the day since he won the Senior Schools Cup with St Munchins, the Munster, Ireland and Lions star will be the Grand Marshall of the Limerick St Patrick’s Day parade. More often than not, Limerick people are shyer than most when saying where they are from. In recent times though we are seeing more reason to become like other counties. We are beginning to take the lead and more importantly the plaudits. It is about time for the “Sporting capital of Ireland”
