The company has declined to comment on reports that between 40-50 per cent of its workforce in the two plants in Mungret and Meath would be let go.
The company has said it met with unions representing workers at both plants on April 15 and that there has been contact between the two sides since then. In a statement the company said: “The company advised the unions that the continuing deterioration in market conditions and a sustained decline in the demand for cement products have led to the need for a restructuring plan to be introduced at all of its locations.”
The Fine Gael deputy said, โI am extremely concerned at reports that jobs at one of Limerickโs longest-standing employers are under serious threat.ย The Irish Cement plant is synonymous with Limerick and it is imperative that every effort is made to save jobs thereโ.
โI will be raising this issue with Minister for Enterprise and Innovation, Batt OโKeeffe in the Dail next week.ย ย
โThe future of the CRH plant in Limerick is of utmost importance to the people working there and to Limerick and the wider region.ย Every effort must be made to save the jobs at the plant.ย ย
