International Jazz Improvisation

JULY sees the welcome return of Philadelphia’s supreme vibraphonist Tony Miceli to Limerick for the third International Jazz Improvisation Workshop. This will be held at the Peter Dee Academy Of Music on Sunday July 25, the day gathering momentum to culminate in a student/ teacher evening jam Upstairs in Dolan’s Pub.

Tony Miceli is an internationally renowned musician and jazz educator. He teaches at the University of the Arts, at Rowan University and at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He is also webmaster and host of  www.vibesworkshop.com. which has a membership of 1500 vibraphone players worldwide.

“International Jazz Improvisation Workshop is growing in stature year by year and is now a major event for Limerick,” says Limerick Jazz’s John Daly.

 Admission is €10 to the wider public for the Sunday July 25 gig starting at 9pm in Dolan’s.

Whitten-Haslam trophy for Ancór

Ancór chamber choir, based in Limerick, took home the prestigious Whitten-Haslam trophy for Sacred Music from 2010 AIMS Choral Music Festival in New Ross. Adjudicator Geoffrey Spratt, head of Music in Cork Institute of Technology, said that Ancór’s performance of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditsye Dyevo (Ave Maria) was “one of two spine-tingling moments” he experienced during the weekend of competitions.

With that, the panel of adjudicators,  awarded 90 marks to Ancór’s musical endeavours. Spratt went on to say that Ancór was one of two choirs only to achieve this coveted high score in 2010.

The choir’s musical director Cecilia Madden said the Whiten-Haslam trophy was “a tribute to the hard work and dedication and immense talent of Ancór’s members.”

Tweak’s call for submissions

LIMERICK’S third annual digital/ technological tweek showcase takes place in Limerick between Monday September 13 and Friday 24.

Tweak is an interactive art festival aiming to promote the understanding of the use of technology in our lives.

This year’s tweak consists of an exhibition, cinema, talks, music performances and a week long workshop and lots more in-between.

Submissions are currently open for the following categories: exhibition; workshop; cinema; music performance; listening post; symposium

Susan Millar DuMars

SUMMER readings at the White House on Wednesday nights by poets and writers of the Mid West and invited artists continue well.

Next Wednesday June 30 from 9pm, Susan Millar DuMars, born in Philadelphia, will read from her newly published second collection, Dreams for Breakfast (Salmon Publishing). 

 Since 2003, Millar DuMars and her husband Kevin Higgins have organised the successful Over the Edge reading series.  Her first full collection of her poetry was Big Pink Umbrella, also published by Salmon press in Galway.  Admission is free and finger food provided to all comers.
