Death of Sean Murphy, GAA writer and historian

LIMERICK was this week mourning the death of Sean Murphy, former public relations officer for the Limerick City and County Boards, and author of several books on GAA affairs.

The late Mr Murphy, who was in his mid 70s, was a native of Herbertstown.

In the late 1960s, he made national headlines when suspended from the GAA after having attended and addressed the gathering at a schoolboy soccer function at the Parkway Hotel.

A prolific writer, he was correspondent for a number of newspapers and hosted sports programmes on local radio stations.

Winner of four McNamee awards, he penned, in association with the late Seamus O Ceallaigh, a history of Limerick GAA in 1984, to coincide with the GAA’s centenary celebrations.

While gaelic games was his first love, he was also an authority on cycling and athletics.

Sympathy is extended to his wife Teresa and children John, Dermot, Brian, Orla and Niamh.
